“PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — A bipartisan bill that would phase out PFAS-containing firefighting foam in Pennsylvania passed the state Senate Monday by a 48-1 vote.

Senate Bill 980, sponsored by Sens. Gene Yaw (R-Lycoming) and Nick Miller (D-Lehigh), would ban the manufacture, sale, and distribution of PFAS-based Class B firefighting foam beginning July 1, 2027, and prohibit its use starting Jan. 1, 2028.

The measure would also require warning labels on firefighter protective gear containing PFAS.

PFAS, known as ‘forever chemicals,’ have been linked to health issues including cancer, liver and kidney disease, and immune system suppression.

Supporters say firefighters face increased exposure through firefighting foam, while the chemicals have also contaminated drinking water supplies in communities across Pennsylvania.”…
