“Scientists have found elevated levels of ‘forever chemicals’ in sea otters off the coast of British Columbia, with toxins spiking even higher near major cities and shipping routes.
In a study published in the Oxford University Press journal Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Tuesday, researchers analyzed 18 tissue samples from 11 dead sea otters found along the coast of Vancouver Island and to the north between 2016 and 2021.
Dana Price, who led the study from the University of British Columbia’s Marine Mammal Research Unit, said her team found forever chemical concentration was about three times higher in animals found on the southern reaches of Vancouver Island, where shipping lanes and urban centres concentrate.” …
