The story started with viewer messages saying something didn’t smell right along that stretch of road in Rogers County. News On 6 looked into it and found that the substance behind the smell — biosolids — is something communities across Oklahoma have dealt with for years. Neighbors near the road didn’t want to speak on camera, but they’re not alone in raising concerns.
What are biosolids?
Biosolids are treated sewage sludge — a mix of human and industrial waste — that gets trucked from cities and spread on rural farmland as free fertilizer.
Saundra Traywick, who has fought the use of biosolids on farmland across Oklahoma since 2019, described what’s actually in it.
‘Every gross, nasty human bodily fluid, as well as your Clorox bleach, your Drano, your dish detergent, your laundry detergent’ ends up in the mix, Traywick said. She said the material also includes industrial waste and residue from pharmaceutical and illegal drugs that pass through the sewage system.”…
