“Massachusetts lawmakers and advocates who visited Maine on Tuesday are aiming to replicate that state’s playbook in tackling contamination caused by PFAS forever chemicals, particularly sewage sludge on farms that can pose health risks.

In 2022, Maine became the first state to ban spreading sewage sludge on farms and the sale of compost that contains sludge, according to the Maine Morning Star.

The research trip revolved around bills from Senator Jo Comerford and Representative James Arena-DeRosa that would similarly ban the land application of sludge. It would also block the sale of fertilizer containing biosolids — defined as ‘treated or untreated or untreated sewage sludge’ — unless manufacturers can prove the product does not contain ‘measurable’ PFAS.” …
