“Federal standards indicate there is no safe level for certain types of ‘forever chemicals,’ meaning even 1 part per trillion — equal to one drop of water in 20 Olympic swimming pools — could pose a risk.
‘Now, some would argue that that’s really kind of small, and why do we have to even worry about that?’ said Dan Firth, the chair of the Solid Waste and Mining Committee for the Tennessee chapter of the Sierra Club. ‘Well, 4 parts per trillion is equal to about 14 trillion molecules in 1 liter of water. That’s still plenty of PFAS to cause harm when they bioaccumulate in tissues.’
Firth and Nick Jackson, an attorney with PFAS Georgia, were featured speakers during a meeting of the Southeast Tennessee group of the Sierra Club on Monday evening. Jackson is part of a legal team testing water around Northwest Georgia for the contaminants and said he represents about a thousand landowners in that part of the state.” …
