“ITHACA, N.Y. —  A proposal to develop artificial turf fields on Cornell University’s campus has spurred concern among environmentalists and division among local planning officials. 

The reason: PFAS, a group of chemicals that researchers have linked to harmful health effects in humans and animals. Some of these chemicals have been identified as carcinogenic or potentially carcinogenic.

Cornell’s Meinig Fieldhouse project, which is slated to cost around $55 million, aims to develop 94,000 square feet of indoor recreation space and an outdoor field hockey field. The project as planned will be built across municipal boundaries that run through the campus, within both the city and the town of Ithaca.”…
