“CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Professional Fire Fighters Association of South Carolina is working with a group to find ways to protect firefighters from forever chemicals.
The group Diagnose Early developed a self-test kit for firefighters to help catch exposure to per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS. PFAS have been used for decades in everyday items to resist heat, oil, stains, grease and water. PFAS are also used in first responder gear, mostly on the outside layer.
Medical experts say PFAS can cause cancer and Professional Fire Fighters Association of South Carolina President Roger Odachowski said cancer is one of the leading killers for firefighters.
‘My Brothers and Sisters are being exposed to PFAS on a daily basis. It is proven to be in our safety turnout gear, materials involved in fires, and in products used for fire fighting,’ he says. ‘Firefighters are becoming aware this is a major cause of our increased rates of cancers. Being able to understand what PFAS is in our bodies will help as we fight this huge health issue.'”…
