“The U.S. Department of Defense is expanding a PFAS cleanup strategy developed in northern Michigan to other polluted bases around the country.

Camp Grayling and Selfridge Air National Guard Base near Detroit are among 40 bases around the U.S. where the military will tackle toxic PFAS contamination by installing stopgap cleanup systems called ‘interim remedial actions’ or IRAs.

The Feb. 6 announcement follows an expansion of such stopgap systems at the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda, where community activists last month applauded Air Force plans to install more interim remedies after years of frustration and anger.

The Wurtsmith cleanup expansion happened under an August defense policy directive that instructed military branches to prioritize interim remedies where possible.” …
