“Kushies, an Ontario-based baby supply company, said it will be taking ‘proactive steps’ to test its products after confirming that two of its bibs were part of a recent study that found potentially harmful chemicals in dozens of Canadian-made and imported products.

‘Kushies takes infant safety very seriously. We are all parents and users of our products. Our products meet and exceed all government and institutional requirements,’ Kushies said in a statement issued on social media. ‘We’d like to reassure you that our mission, above all else, is to provide safe baby products for all our children.’

In the statement, Kushies said it does not have company data on the chemicals from the study because ‘these are not chemicals that are part of any testing requirements or regulations in baby products.’ Headquartered in Stoney Creek, Ont., the company plans to do further tests and respond once they get the results and ‘guidance from the industry and government agencies’…

The statement came hours after a Toronto woman sent the company a photo of a bib in Kushies packaging, side-by-side to a photo used in the study, which had logos censored out…

Sarah Lesniewski, a Toronto mother of an 11-month-old baby, said she was prompted to ask the company if their products were included in the study after noticing similarities in the packaging of bibs she had purchased for her own child. She took to Twitter with her question on Wednesday, after reading the Star’s story…

Lesniewski said she is disappointed in the company’s initial denial that their products were in fact included in the study…

‘This is something you made, so how do you not know what’s in it? If you made a cake, you’d know the ingredients,’ she said.”
