The Social Discovery of a Class of Emerging Contaminants

Montclair, New Jersey

Suspected contamination source: unknown

Montclair’s three municipal wells were sampled twice in 2015 for PFOA and results ranged from 35 ppt to 48 ppt. These levels are extremely close to New Jersey’s current statewide safe level of 40 ppt for PFOA (and well above the state’s proposed safe level of 14 ppt). The NJ Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has made no recommendations to shut wells or filter water. Montclair Water Bureau installed a carbon filtration system in one of the wells.
