Soybeans to the rescue: Michigan farmer-firefighter pushes PFAS-free foam

“Doctors diagnosed Patrick Butler with bladder cancer three years ago. He didn’t know for sure what caused it, yet he can’t stop blaming Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF).

You see, Butler served as a firefighter for 34 years, and AFFF, which contains fluorinated compounds, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), is one tool firefighters use to combat hard-to-put-out fires. However, PFAS may be harmful to human health, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Now the 76-year-old Butler is on a mission to protect firefighters — and help soybean farmers — via a soybean-based firefighting foam that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals.” …
