Advocates push bills aimed at restricting, monitoring PFAS

“Environmentalists and health advocates are making a last-minute push for bills that would restrict the use of chemical substances categorized as PFAS in the remaining 12 days of the legislative session.

The legislation would prevent PFAS — often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ due to their persistence in the environment and in bloodstreams of those who are exposed — from being intentionally used in common household and personal products and would require manufacturers to notify consumers when items contain the chemicals.

PFAS are found in beauty and menstrual products, cookware, paint, textiles and other everyday items, advocates said. Concerns over exposure to PFAS through the items — as well as through drinking water — include the potential that reproductive problems and developmental harms in children could result. Supporters of the legislation also say exposure could increase risks of certain cancers and interfere with hormone balances.” …
