“LANSING, MI — A New Jersey state scientific team warned the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality last year about “highly misleading” statements made by a private toxicologist Wolverine World Wide is relying on for expert advice about toxic fluorochemicals the shoe company used, which are now plaguing drinking water supplies in Kent County.
Robert Mueller with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection emailed two DEQ geologists requesting they pass along a sharp critique of assertions made online about the health impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances called PFAS or PFCs by Janet K. Anderson, a consultant hired by Wolverine last fall.
Mueller, a research scientist who leads an interstate regulatory council PFAS team, sent the email on Nov. 27, 2017, two days before a townhall with state public health experts on the still-expanding Wolverine investigation held at Rockford High School.
In the email, New Jersey scientists rebut conclusions about the potential harm from PFAS exposure made by Anderson on Wolverine’s blog, noting omissions of information that doesn’t support her statements and deviations from accepted analytical methods.”
